LG 47LE5500 47-Inch HDTV Review

With its thin profile and lightweight bezel tinted, the LG 47LE5500, making it now one of the 10 best HDTVs you can, engraved for an attractive home theater center, plus you get sharp pictures, great color quality, and many web applications such as Netflix and VUDU. The 47-inch HDTV uses with local dimming, which is very energy efficient LED-backlit display. The panels measured contrast ratio is only average, and it suffers from backlight seepage, although not nearly as pronounced as other edge-lit TVs I have seen.

Design

One of the things I loved about last year’s LG 42SL90 was just on the edge to edge glass design. You will not want here, but sits the 47-inch panel on the 47LE5500 in a black case measures only 1.2 inches thick, it is among the thinner TVs we have seen in the PC Labs recently. The top and side mounts are 1.5 inches wide each, and the lower panel is 2.5 cm wide. All four sides sport a glossy black finish with a smooth reddish accent is similar to Samsung’s Touch of Color design bezel. The screen has a matte, non-reflective, anti-reflection coating, and the right rectangular base is robust and provides a simple pivot maneuverability. 10-Watt Down-firing speakers mounted on the bottom of the case are much louder and rolled all the way to be without distorting, but you do not get a lot of bass in the face of the slim housing design. For a robust built-in audio experience, HDTVs from Mitsubishi are a better bet.

Seven touch-sensitive buttons and a power switch are positioned along the right side of the lower panel, they remain dark until you know a whiff of them, at which point they all shine. As with the LG 42SL90, the menu system very easy to use and easy and offers a variety of basic and advanced settings. There are five preset video modes (Vivid, Standard, Cinema, sports and games) and two expert mode (for advanced calibration) that allow you to settings such as black level, gamma, color, optimize color space and individual color saturation. The LG also offers outstanding 47LE5500 Easy Calibration Wizard, which offers users a simple way as luminance for a particular lighting environment set.

LG remote controls are generally well designed and easy to operate, and the supplied remote control 47LE5500 is no exception. The 9.25-inch wand has 42 buttons, the backlight and very accommodating, that is, with the exception of the rocker, which can be a bit picky. Dedicated NetCast, Widget, and Energy Saving buttons make it easy to switch between Web services or to switch to one of four modes the power consumption (minimum, medium, maximum or off).

Features

The set is a good selection feature on ports, two USB ports that are conveniently located on the left side of the housing where they are the place to share with a series of audio inputs, an HDMI port and a headphone jack. Back in Internet connections include three HDMI jacks, a connector for an optional wireless media hub, PC (VGA) input, digital audio in and out jacks, two sets of component A/V connections, a set of composite A/V ports and a coaxial TV connection. None of the ports are recessed on the back, so be sure to leave room for the cabling when installing this set on the wall.

You get a variety of web applications with the 47LE5500, including the usual set of Yahoo Widgets, and video services NetCast Entertainment. Widgets weather, sports, news and finance channels along with games like Texas Hold ‘Em, Sudoku and Quiz Master. Social networking applications include Twitter and Flickr. NetCast offers Netflix, VUDU, and YouTube video streaming and Picasa Web Albums.

Performance

After a basic dark calibration images from the DisplayMate HDTV Setup program that produces 47LE5500 a contrast ratio of 1,381:1, which is not terrible, but slightly lower than that of an LED-backlit TV (based LED Toshiba 55UX600U expected was measured with a much higher ratio of 3,910:1). The low measurement is not all that surprising in view of the panels 0.29 cd/m2 black level, which is compared with the relatively 55UX600U (.08 cd/m2) light. On the page above, in my tests, color accuracy was spot on and evenly from dark to light-scaled and natural skin tones appeared and color-free. The panel also offers very good viewing angle without color shift visible from the sides. There was a hint of backlight seepage along the sides of the plate, but you must be very precise to have noticed. Compared with the 55UX600U which also lights the edge, the error is relatively small.

High-definition performance was very good, the 120Hz panel delivered a sharp, detailed image while viewing scenes from The Wolfman on Blu-ray Disc, but I have a weak one halo formation effect during the scene where Benicio Del Toro’s character is notice drawn up a mountain on a horse cart. Tinker with the anti-scratch and anti-blur levels in the setting TruMotion obviously do not make a difference, in fact, saw the picture better off with TruMotion. Not surprisingly adopted the HD HQV 47LE5500 each performance test with flying colors, and it handles HD (1080i) programming from the PC Labs satellite box with aplomb. There was some background noise present during standard-definition broadcasts, but overall image quality is quite acceptable.

As with most televisions with LED backlighting, the 47LE5500 not bust your electricity bill. The kit uses an average of 118 watts in normal mode (with power saving disabled) to a Blu-ray movies. You can even more money by using energy-saving function and setting it to minimum, which uses only 95 watts of power and save quite watchable. The medium (77 watts) and maximum (55 watts) can be particularly low in energy consumption, but are too dark. Because of its low power consumption and energy-saving options, deserving of our 47LE5500 GreenTech approval.

Overall, LG 47LE5500 good color and high-quality depth in an aesthetically pleasing, thin 1.2-inch cabinet, plus you get a nice set of interactive Web applications. During its contrast ratio and black level performance could be better, is its power-saving skills a definite plus for energy consumers. Although the $ 2,000 list price is a bit steep when you consider older but still widely used 46-inch screens, such as Panasonic TC-P46G10 plasma and the Toshiba Regza 55SV670U, 46 -inch and 55-inch models. The good news is, as with many HDTVs, intelligent online shopping can knock several hundred dollars off the list price.
